EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE & LITERACY DEVICE
FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
Brief: My team and I were tasked with prototyping and building a technology product that could impact elementary education.
Problem: Learning to identify personal emotions is an integral part of a child's psychological development. By more critically recognizing their own feelings, children can more appropriately handle their impulsive reactions. It is essential for elementary schools to create an environment to build healthy emotional habits as well as teach empathy and compassion within the classroom.
Solution: Create an interactive device that empowers teachers and enables children to communicate their feelings and emotions.
The device utilizes color association for each emotional state and pairs each button to its associated color: green pairs to happy, blue to sad, red to angry, and purple to scared, fearful, anxious, and nervous. Finally, we included a black button off to the side to act as an on/off button.
To bring our idea to life, we utilized an Arduino Uno and an Adafruit NeoPixel RGB LED. Additionally, we used a 1Sheeld to integrate cloud data mapping so that we could view a user's inputs over time within an excel spreadsheet.
Conducted primary and secondary research to develop an understanding of the problem facing elementary school children. Sketched initial prototypes and laser cut the final product to meet desired specifications. Built and coded the prototype using an Arduino Uno and a NeoPixel RGB LED. Researched and incorporated additional technologies such as the 1Sheeld to bring our idea to life. Conducted usability and user testing with elementary school teachers and students.
