MOBILE APPLICATION TO HELP USERS STAY IN CONTACT
WITH CLOSE FRIENDS & FAMILY UTILIZING THE PRINCIPLES OF GAME DYNAMICS
Challenge: During a 2-week design sprint, how can we use the principles of game dynamics to improve close relationships with friends and family?
Problem: In a world of digital profiles and social media accounts, it's hard to find time to keep in contact with close friends and family on a more intimate and personal level. While social news feeds may provide a way to stay in the loop of what your friends and family members are up to, there is no compelling reason to reach out and make contact beyond a digital interface.
Solution: Create a mobile app that makes it easier for users to stay in contact with close friends and family utilizing the principles of game dynamics.
My team and I created a mobile application that provides users with an easy way of staying in contact with their close friends and family beyond a digital interface. Utilizing principles of game dynamics, we developed an interactive experience that provides users with visual feedback and rewards as you keep your friends and family members close.
Reach informs users of opportunities to reach out to their close friends through the use of story building. Within the app is an interactive galaxy, with the user at the center. As the user reaches out and shows support to those in their orbit, they'll begin to revolve closer to the user in the center. But beware, if users delay in reaching out, their friends and family members will begin to drift away!
After signing up or logging in through Facebook, users are prompted to choose close friends and family whom they'd like to keep in touch with. These contacts will be added to their small, private list called your orbit. The Reach app then aggregates the key details from Facebook to notify users of important life events happening to those in their orbit.
The app makes it easy to make contact and send support in the form of a thoughtful card or an inexpensive gift that fits the occasion. Select a friend or family member and a Reach branded envelope will be sent their way. Through the system view, users can check up on friends within their orbit, who are represented as planets circling around the user. The longer a user goes without making contact with a member of their orbit, the further their friends drift away. But when they make contact and send a gift or card, that friend or family member will begin to orbit closer to the user.
I designed the information architecture, user flow, wireframes, and assisted in the designs of the final UI.
